How is melanin formed?

August 09, 2024
Melanin is a black or brown biological pigment produced by melanocytes in the skin, mainly produced by melanocytes in the skin, and then transferred to keratinocytes in the epidermis of the skin, finally appearing on the skin. Therefore, the formation of skin melanin mainly involves two processes, one is the melanin before pigment formation, and the other is the melanin after pigment formation.

1. Pre pigment melanin:

The formation and transfer of melanin is a complex process that involves reactions such as oxidation, reduction, deoxygenation, hydrolysis, and peroxidation. Normally, the skin increases the formation of melanin when exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Therefore, it is recommended to take appropriate measures for sun protection, such as using sunscreen, sun umbrellas, sun protective clothing, etc.

2. Melanin after pigmentation:

(1) Secretion: The secretion of melanin is regulated by hormone levels in the body, which can increase skin color by promoting the secretion of melanocytes. Therefore, factors that promote the formation of melanin include promoting the synthesis of melanin, inhibiting the proliferation of melanocytes, and melanin conversion;

(2)Damage: When the skin is injured or stimulated, it can stimulate the formation of melanin, which can cause damage to melanocytes and subsequently lead to a decrease in melanin;

(3)Disease: Impaired liver function can affect the metabolism of melanin, leading to the accumulation of melanin in the body. In addition, some diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis can lead to a decrease in the liver's ability to inactivate estrogen, which in turn increases the formation of melanin;

(4)Lifestyle habits such as staying up late and smoking can lead to weakened skin metabolism, resulting in the formation of melanin.

Some actions that can be taken to combat black in daily life
1: Sunscreen

It can avoid enhancing the activity of tyrosinase, anti black anti-aging, and reducing the generation of light aging. Sunscreen needs to be started from a young age, following the ABC principles of Avoid, Block, and Cream. Try not to expose yourself to sunlight when possible. When going out, you can choose to use umbrellas, hats, sunglasses, and other sunscreen covers. When you can't cover up, choose sunscreen.

2: Try to have a healthy lifestyle as much as possible

Reducing staying up late, getting enough sleep, and avoiding smoking are all ways to help the body produce fewer free radicals.

3: Reduce pigment deposition caused by skin problems

For example, many people develop pigmentation after suffering from certain skin diseases, which is a common occurrence in many skin diseases.

4: Use some effective skincare products to effectively combat blackening

Firstly, ingredients that can directly or indirectly inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, Thiamidol, etc.

Secondly, one can choose ingredients with excellent blackening properties. Classic examples include VC and its derivatives, which can help reduce the formation of melanin intermediates (doboquinone) and decrease the production of melanin. Again, you can choose some ingredients with soothing effects, such as centella asiatica glycoside and glycyrrhetinic acid glycoside, which are commonly used as soothing ingredients added to skincare products.
